I started the year with a few New Year’s resolutions — but my main, and most challenging, was this one — becoming more physically active.

More of us than ever are sitting around all day with a seemingly ever-expanding array of distractions, from smartphones and social media to streaming sites and TV. It’s too tempting after a day of work and family to tune out or spend our waking lives addicted to our digital devices.

The consequences are clear — it is quite literally, and slowly, killing us and making us miserable as we slowly waste our lives away. This inescapable existential dread is reinforced by the very real fact that a physically inactive life is shorter than it needs to be and one in which we are less mobile and less happy.

Now a few drinks on New Year’s Eve is a great way to celebrate the new year but a terrible way of preparing for any New Year’s resolutions you have planned. It is a great excuse to skip the 1st of January and start fresh the day after.
